Modern American Recycling Services (M.A.R.S.) and Porto Central have renewed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in May 2024. With the document, the companies extend the partnership to advance the feasibility studies for the implementation of the ship recycling and decommissioning yard at the port complex. In line with the decision, M.A.R.S. Europa S.A has consolidated its presence in Brazil with the creation of the subsidiary "M.A.R.S. do Brasil", expanding its operations in the country. The company's official website already mentions the municipality of Presidente Kennedy (ES) as the location of the new facility.
The initiative seeks to combine Porto Centra’s deep-water infrastructure and capacity to receive large vessels with M.A.R.S. 's expertise in handling complex ship recycling projects to develop a strategic initiative. This endeavor aims to generate jobs, boost the local economy, and promote sustainable practices that contribute to the socio-environmental development of the region.
This initiative follows the growing global demand for sustainable ship recycling facilities, driven by the expected growth of decommissioning vessels and offshore platforms in the coming years.
The Sustainable Ship Recycling Yard in Porto Central positions the project in a strategic location to serve both the main maritime routes and the demands of the national market, consolidating Brazil as a sustainable recycling hub in Latin America.
