Porto Central, one of the largest port logistics complexes under construction in Brazil, and Praxys, a consulting firm specialized in business and financial transactions, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create one of the largest container terminals in Latin America. The strategic partnership aims to provide an infrastructure capable of receiving the largest container ships in the world, consolidating the terminal as a strategic logistics hub for the region.
There is currently a shortage of deep-water container ports on the East Coast of South America. As ships become increasingly larger, the need for port hubs will inevitably increase over time.
Strategically located in the center of the Brazilian East Coast, in the Southeast Region of the country, in Presidente Kennedy (ES), approximately 200 nautical miles north of Rio de Janeiro (RJ), the container terminal will have an access depth of 18 meters in the first phase and 20 meters in the second phase, a unique feature in South America. This feature allows the docking of large container ships with a capacity of 21,000 to 24,000 TEUs, positioning the port as a key point for the consolidation and distribution of cargo on the east coast of South America.
In the initial phase, the terminal with 1,370 meters of quay will have the capacity to handle 2.5 million TEUs from 2030. With the following phases, the terminal will reach a total capacity of 6 million TEUs, strengthening Brazil's position in the global market. In addition, the port complex will be connected to a future railway network, promoting integration of the States of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais, and facilitating access to large urban centers, including Belo Horizonte (MG).
Porto Central container terminal will allow the use of large vessels in trade operations to and from Brazil, providing significant gains in economies of scale, as well as maximizing the entry of cargo from Asia and/or Europe, allowing transshipment to Argentina and Uruguay, solving logistical bottlenecks and optimizing maritime routes.
Praxys's work also includes marketing management and contract negotiations, capitalizing on the extensive experience of Jesper Kjaedegaard, a former Maersk Line executive with over 40 years of experience in the container, maritime transport, port planning, and international logistics sectors.
"This new terminal is exactly the transformation that Brazil needs. It will redefine the landscape of container services on the east coast of South America, attracting more shipping routes, increasing the country's competitiveness, and bringing substantial benefits to operators, exporters and importers, and the local economy" says Kjaedegaard.
